The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice proposed updated guidelines for mergers, opening the draft up for public comment for 60 days. The document lays out 13 new guidelines that aim to specifically address large acquisitions made by big tech companies and “platform” companies, tightening anti-monopoly rules for the newer economic sector.
“Unchecked consolidation threatens the free and fair markets upon which our economy is based,” stated Attorney General Merrick Garland. “These updated Merger Guidelines respond to modern market realities and will enable the Justice Department to transparently and effectively protect the American people from the damage that anticompetitive mergers cause.”
